Clay teapot 93626

A traditional Chinese teapot crafted from rich red Yixing-style clay in the classic Shui Ping (水平) form — one of the most practical and historically significant shapes in gongfu tea culture. The name Shui Ping, meaning “horizontal” or “level,” refers to the precise proportional balance between the lid, handle, and spout, designed to create an even water line and exceptionally smooth pouring performance.

This interpretation features a softly rounded body with calm symmetrical proportions and a stable low profile characteristic of traditional Shui Ping teapots. The balanced chamber allows tea leaves to expand evenly during brewing, making the teapot especially suitable for yancha, dancong oolongs, black teas, and aged white teas.

The matte-fired surface highlights the warm mineral richness of the clay and gives the teapot a soft tactile character. A short straight spout ensures a clean, controlled pour with steady flow, while the rounded loop handle provides comfortable balance in the hand. The recessed lid fits neatly within the rim and is finished with a simple cylindrical knop that preserves the restrained elegance of the form.

The body is decorated with engraved Chinese calligraphy in a spontaneous literati style, adding an artistic and contemplative atmosphere to the piece. In traditional Yixing culture, such inscriptions often reference poetry, tea philosophy, or reflections on nature and harmony.

Balanced, understated, and highly functional, the Shui Ping form remains one of the purest expressions of classical Yixing teaware design.
