Jin Jun Mei Gaoshan, Guangxi, 50g.
A high-mountain interpretation of China's most revered black tea style
Jin Jun Mei (金骏眉, "Golden Beautiful Eyebrow") is one of the most celebrated black tea styles in China, originally developed in the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian in 2005. Made exclusively from hand-plucked spring buds, it set a new standard for what Chinese black tea could be — sweet, aromatic, and refined rather than bold and tannic. This particular Jin Jun Mei comes not from its Fujian birthplace, but from the high mountains of Guangxi Province, where altitude, terroir, and local tea tree varieties bring a distinctive character to the classic style.
Guangxi is one of China's oldest tea-growing regions, home to ancient large-leaf cultivars that thrive in the province's lush subtropical highlands. The "Gaoshan" (高山, high mountain) designation indicates that this tea was grown at significant elevation, where cooler temperatures, persistent mist, and reduced sunlight slow the growth of the buds. This results in a higher concentration of amino acids and natural sweetness, and a flavour profile that is more layered and complex than teas grown at lower altitudes.
Processing The tender spring buds are carefully hand-picked, withered, gently rolled into their slender eyebrow-like shape, fully oxidized, and finished with a light roast. The process follows the traditional Jun Mei method — no smoke, no heavy roasting — letting the natural character of the high-mountain leaf speak for itself.
Appearance Fine, tightly twisted buds in a mix of dark and golden tones, with visible golden tips throughout. The infusion is a bright, clear amber-gold — luminous and inviting.
Tasting notes Rich yet elegant. The first sip reveals a smooth, natural honey sweetness that gradually opens into warm notes of cocoa, roasted chestnut, and ripe stone fruit. The Guangxi terroir adds its own signature: a fuller body and a deeper, more mineral undertone compared to the lighter Fujian style. There is a pleasant fruity brightness in the mid-palate and a long, sweet aftertaste with hints of dried longan and warm spice. No bitterness or astringency — just round, velvety smoothness from start to finish.
Aroma Warm and enveloping. The dry leaves carry notes of dark honey, dried fruit, and a faint cocoa sweetness. Once steeped, the aroma blooms into a complex blend of caramel, orchid-like florals, and toasted grain.
Effect Warming and gently invigorating. This is a tea with a clean, sustained energy — rich enough to satisfy on its own, yet refined enough for a contemplative session. An excellent choice for cooler mornings or as an evening treat.
